Remembering Tupac Shakur

Happy birthday to hip hop legend, Tupac Shakur! He would have been 43-years-old today. I wrote about my love for Tupac awhile back and although he’s no longer with us, his music and spirit still lives on. He was only 25 when he passed away and already made a huge impact in the music industry while he was here. He might ask, “How Long Will They Mourn Me?”…the answer? forever. Fans will NEVER forget Tupac Shakur. Rest In Peace.

Tupac Shakur (1971-1996) Gone Too Soon

When I talk about money all you see is the struggle/ When I tell you I’m livin’ large, you tell me it’s trouble.” (‘I Ain’t Mad Atcha’)

“Fingertips on the hips as I dip, gotta get a tight grip, don’t slip/ Loose lips sink ships, it’s a trip/ I love the way she licks her lips, see me jockin’/ Put a little twist in her hips ’cause I’m watchin’” (‘I Get Around’)

We gotta make a change. It’s time for us as a people to start making some changes. Let’s change the way we eat, let’s change the way we live, And let’s change the way we treat each other. You see the old way wasn’t working so it’s on us to do. What we gotta do to survive (Changes)

#ThrowbackThursday Shai: If I Ever Fall in Love

“The very first time, that I saw your brown eyes. Your lips said hello and I said hi.”

Will we ever have music like this again? I hope so, but if not, then that’s why I created these #ThrowbackThursday posts to remember all of the classic hits. Shai’s 1992 track, If I Ever Fall in Love was an instant hit and quickly climbed the Billboard charts, staying at #2 for eight weeks.

This song brings back memories to my college radio days. Whenever I played this record people would call in and say how pleased they were to hear this throwback.

A Cappella records sound so sexy because listeners can hear all of the harmonies without the distraction of any instruments. Can music artists please make A Cappellas cool again? Sigh. But for now, take a listen to the track that will take you back down memory lane.

#ThrowbackThursday: 2Pac “Dear Mama”

In honor of Mother’s Day, I’m taking it back to 1995 with this 2Pac classic, Dear Mama from Pac’s third album Me Against the World. This song was written as a dedication to his mother, Afeni Shakur.

Don’t cha know we love ya? Sweet lady
Dear mama
Place no one above ya, sweet lady
You are appreciated
Don’t cha know we love ya?

Dedicated to the Mothers.

Happy Mother’s Day!

rob and ezSuch a sad day in hip hop. Rodney Bryce, also known as DJ E-Z Rock, has passed away. He was 46. The cause of death is unknown but was confirmed by a spokesperson for Rob Base to Rolling Stone.

The hip-hop duo from Harlem, New York, is best known for their 1988 single, “It Takes Two.” The catchy track still gets people moving on the dance floor and can be heard in films such as Love & Basketball.

I saw the duo perform a few years ago and the crowd went insane as soon as Rob Base rapped, “I want to rock right now. I’m Rob Base and I came to get down!” Fans joined in. The energy was high. The bass was bumping. It looked like everyone in the venue was out of their seat and rapping along.

DJ E-Z Rock will be missed, but his music will still live on.

“Cause Rob is in the front, EZ Rock is on the back-up.” It Takes Two

Watch the duo perform Joy & Pain live!
