Hey, girls!
May is Mental Health Awareness Month and it’s a time for individuals, organizations, and communities to come together and shed light on the importance of mental well-being, reduce stigma, and promote support for those struggling with mental health challenges. I usually share so many tools about what to do for self-care, but today I’m going to give some different advice.
I’ve been doing something different for the past two months and I feel so relaxed, present, and strong mentally and spiritually.
While self-care is crucial for managing stress and promoting mental health, it’s important to recognize when you need a break from the routine and allow yourself some time to rest and recharge.
I usually suggest exercise, meditation, journaling, dancing, affirmations and more because these practices can be incredibly beneficial, but they can also become overwhelming if they start to feel like obligations or additional items on your to-do list. And we all know we want to slow our minds down, not add to the mental load.
Taking a break from self-care doesn’t mean neglecting your well-being. Instead, it means giving yourself permission to step back and focus on other aspects of your life or simply taking a break from structured self-care activities. If you don’t complete your full routine…it’s okay! I’m learning to give myself more compassion and grace during my healing and growth journey and I want to encourage you to do the same. Also, a break allows you to prioritize different aspects of your life, such as relationships, work, or leisure activities, without feeling guilty or overwhelmed.
During this break, it can be helpful to engage in activities that bring you joy, relaxation, and a sense of rejuvenation. It might involve spending time with loved ones, exploring new hobbies, going on a vacation, or simply giving yourself permission to rest and do nothing for a while. I’ve been indulging in some reality tv, switched my self-help books to fiction novels, paused from journaling and even graduated from my therapy sessions, and I feel damn good!
Remember, taking a break from self-care can actually be an act of self-care in itself! It’s about finding balance and flexibility in your approach to well-being. By allowing yourself a break, you can prevent burnout and create space for spontaneity and enjoyment in your life.
Ultimately, the key is to listen to your body and mind, and honor your needs and limitations. I was feeling tired, exhausted and overwhelmed. If you feel drained by your self-care routine, it may be a sign that you need to take a step back and give yourself permission to take a break. Remember, self-care is a journey, and finding what works best for you is a continuous process.
