#ThrowbackThursday Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five: The Message

In honor of BET’s 4-part hip hop docu-series, “The Message,” I decided to dedicate this throwback Thursday post to Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five who dropped their classic, The Message, in 1982.

At a time where most hip hop was all about party music, this particular track painted a picture of the problems taking place in the inner city.  Rolling Stone magazine gave The Message five stars and ranked it at #51 in its List of Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time (the  highest ranking hip-hop song on the list). It was later named the greatest hip-hop song of all time in 2012.

Don’t push me cause I’m close to the edge
I’m trying not to lose my head
 It’s like a jungle sometimes
It makes me wonder how I keep from going under
