This moment of motivation is inspired by a conversation I had with my mom. She told me that someone who works in her building got on the same elevator as her one day, and she greeted them by saying, “Hi, how are you?” The two never saw each other before because they work in separate departments. So when my mom spoke and asked an everyday question, surprisingly, the stranger opened up and expressed their sadness about being let go from the company, and other personal problems. My mom then asked if the person needed a hug, and they accepted, gratefully.
This reminds me of a time where I was on set for a photo shoot and a homeless bystander was cheering me on. After the shoot, the guy wanted to shake my hand, and then he asked for a hug, which I gave him. The photographer was surprised at my kind gesture and said, “You’re better than me. God was probably using you as an angel for that guy today.”
In essence, you never know what someone is going through. We’re all fighting our own battle and have our unique experiences in life. We all have ups and downs; our good days and our bad days.
So don’t judge. Say hello. Smile at someone you don’t know. Offer a hug. Offer words of encouragement. The random act of kindness could brighten someone’s day.
Most of the time, people just want to know that someone cares about them. You might turn someone’s day around with a small, but unforgettable gesture. So be kind. Always.
